Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS)
Access and Benefit-Sharing (ABS) has become the important concept underlying the utilization of genetic resources after the entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Nagoya Protocol. To promote utilization of the genetic resources in line with the ABS principles, NBRC conducts the following activities.
Activities on ABS
Notification of Acquisition of the Genetic Resources in Japan
NITE is certified by the Minister of the Economy, Trade and Industry to issue the “Notification of acquisition of the genetic resources in Japan” as specified in Chapter 5 of the ABS Guidelines.
ABS Measures
NBRC has been sharing knowledge and information on ABS measures of various countries/regions with Japanese users to support their lawful access and appropriate utilization of genetic resources.
Bilateral Relation with Asian Countries/Regions
NBRC has been collaborating with the Asian countries/regions to facilitate research and utilization of genetic resources under fair and equitable conditions.
Asian Consortium (ACM)
The Asian Consortium for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Microbial Resources (ACM) holds meetings regularly to discuss relevant and current issues concerning genetic resources in Asia.
Symposium and Workshop
NBRC hosts international symposiums and workshops in collaboration with Biological Resource Centers in Asia and Europe.
