NITE (National Institute of Technology and Evaluation; President: Itaru Yasui) gave a presentation for the media on preventing accidents involving heating appliances as shown in the attached materials.

Of the product accident information reported to the NITE Product Safety Technology Center, the number of accidents involving gas stoves etc. (*1) amounted to 1,489 (*2) for the five-year period from fiscal 2006 to 2010 on a"date of occurrence" basis. As for damage, 58 cases involved loss of life, 34 cases involved serious injury, and 303 cases involved minor injury. 843 cases involved a fire in one or more rooms. Seventy percent or more of the accidents involving gas stoves etc. were"accident which is considered to have been caused entirely by improper or inadvertent use." Hence, many of the accidents can be prevented by stopping improper use and using stoves equipped with safety devices such as a cooking oil overheat prevention device and an automatic shut-off safety device. Taking this into consideration, we urge you to take note of proper and safe use of gas stoves.

Gas stoves etc. include grills, gas cocks, fittings, and connecting tools for gas hoses but do not include portable gas stoves.
