- Product accidents reported to the Product Safety Technology Center at NITE include 1,119 cases involving cords for hair dryers and electric heaters, or power strips, sockets or other power distribution adaptors in the five years from fiscal 2005 to fiscal 2009*1. It is difficult to detect faults in these adaptors by sight, because they do not intrinsically present a source of fire or heat. However, they may cause a fire after continuous improper use. This type of accident increases in winter, with electrical appliances that have high power consumption, such as heaters. Therefore NITE has decided to promote consumer awareness on this issue to give them a clear understanding of accident details and prevent accidents. *1 Number of accidents occurring from fiscal 2005 to fiscal 2009 excluding overlapping cases or non-applicable cases at December 1, 2010
