The National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) held a press briefing on the prevention of product accidents with bicycles.

Among the product accident information reported to NITE, there were 563 issues of product accidents with bicycles between April 1996 and August 2009 (*1). There had been 31, 45, and 67 issues in FY2006 to FY 2008 respectively, but there were 37 issues within 5 months in FY2009, thus it tends to increase, and 5 serious accidents occurred in July to August this year. Among 563 issues, regarding the issues of which investigation had finished and the results have been disclosed, “Accidents not due to the products” were 87 issues, “Accidents of which causes cannot be identified” were 202 issues, and sum of them are 289 issues that occupies 60%, and age of most common users are 10’s. According the product accidents of bicycles that NITE has been disclosing, there are many serious accidents as such that the sum of causing death is 15 issues and the sum of causing serious injuries is 65 issues among those “Accidents not due to the products” and “Accidents of which causes cannot be identified”. Since there are many accidents that supposedly being avoidable if users use bicycles properly, for example, conduct routine inspections, avoid engulfment of extraneous substances to the spoke and/or front fork, and so on, NITE decided to conduct a promotion of consumers’ awareness to prevent accidents by collecting items that bicycle users should inspect their bicycles on a daily basis from among the reported product accidents.
