- Summary:
- Early June in 2009, there was a report of accident that “I had been used a washable pet bottle cap with straw for 2 months, and the straw have gradually tarnished.” From the investigation by the NITE Biological Research Center (NBRC), it had revealed that mold and bacteria had been occurred inside the straw. With straws reusable by attaching them to lids of bottles and etc, there is a possibility of causing mold occurrence.
Notably, molds may occur not only with straws but with every consumer products, and some of molds may have strong toxic characteristics. In addition, there are many consumer products for infants in the market, and there are molds that would not develop tarnish and would not be found with naked eye as the case.
Now is the most preferable season for molds to occur through a year and improper treatments may incur ingestion of molds into bodies and various adverse effects can be considered, NITE decided to conduct a promotion of consumers’ awareness. - Press briefing paper in Japanese
