The National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) held a press briefing on the prevention of product accidents due to IH stoves(electromagnetic cookers) and gas cooking stoves.

- During past 5 years (from FY2004 to FY2008), there had been 18,068 issues (*1) collected as product accident information of NITE, and accidents with IH stoves (electromagnetic cookers) were 59 issues. Among them, fire outbreaks with frying oil were 18 issues.
On the other hand, number of reported issues due to gas cooking stoves at the same period of time amounts to 1,585. Among them, fire outbreaks due to frying oil were 788 issues. This is a considerable number of issues. Notably that all the causes of these accidents were, except the accidents which causes have not been identifiable, “improper use or carelessness”.
Implementation of sensors and/or overheat prevention devices to these products have been improving, however, there have been a considerable number of fire outbreak accidents from frying oil due to “improper or carelessness”, NITE decided to conduct a promotion of consumers’ awareness for prevention of fire outbreaks due to frying oil with IH stoves (electromagnetic cookers) and gas cooking stoves.* Duplicated and/or non-target information are excluded from the number of issues as of June 30th, 2009.
