NITE releases Survey Report on Colored Contact Lenses for non-vision-correction-purposes

The National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) announced the results of its product safety study on colored contact lenses not intended for vision correction.

With regards to colored contact lenses not intended for eyesight correction (hereinafter referred to as "cosmetic colored lenses"), the National Consumer Affairs Center of Japan published a report on the test results of cosmetic colored contact lenses in February 2006. It pointed out concerns about the safety and quality of such lenses including the following:
  1. 1)  Cytotoxicity was found in some cosmetic colored lenses possibly causing irritation to the ocular membrane.
  2. 2)  Pigments were found to be eluted in some lenses.
  3. 3)  Special caution should be exercised in driving vehicles in the nighttime when wearing some colored lenses.

Also, the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE) has received accident reports involving cosmetic colored lenses under its Accident Information Collection System.

In view of the situation, NITE has established the "Study Group for Colored Contact Lenses for non-vision-correction purposes" to conduct surveys on the current status of these lenses including the distribution system, safety evaluation, quality of the lenses, damage caused by the lenses and overseas regulatory measures. A report of the survey results has been compiled and is available for download (Japanese language only).
