Title:
Product Safety Survey Report on Sandal Entrapment Accidents on Escalators
Publisher:
Product Safety Technology Center
Summary:
In August 2007, a child wearing resin sandals caught her foot in an escalator and suffered a fractured middle toe. The manufacturer/importer of the sandals reported the accident to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry under the mandatory reporting system of serious accidents. NITE issued an alert (NITE Alert No.82) on September 6, 2007 to call on consumers to exercise extra caution after receiving a series of accident reports relating to sandal entrapment.
Accidents, however, have continued to be reported and NITE has received reports of 66 cases of this kind to date.
In view of the frequency of accidents, NITE has conducted a sample purchase test of these sandals to investigate their safety. The report of the Product Safety Survey is now available.
